The town received its name from Orange Lawrence, a businessman from Connecticut who settled in Canada and owned many of the village's mills. Orangeville became incorporated as a town in 1874 and today is known as a cultural hub with its thriving arts and theatre scene. A must-see attraction is the Orangeville Art Walk of Tree Sculptures—a collection of tree art scattered throughout the town and created by regional artists who carved sculptures out of dead tree trunks and stumps. Orangeville is also home to several parks such as the Island Lake Conservation Area, which offers year-round recreational opportunities. The town hosts many annual events like the Orangeville Blues and Jazz Festival, as well as several other family-friendly events.
