This island was formed when the hull of the sunken Schooner Nancy created an obstruction in the Nottawasaga River, thereby causing the currents to deposit silt. The Nancy was originally a private vessel that was sequestered by the British in the War of 1812. A museum containing artifacts of the American-British battle is situated on the island, and the ear pleasing ‘Jazz in the Park’ is held there each summer in July. Construction of Sainte-Marie began in 1639, when the French Jesuits identified the site as a suitable base for ministering to the Huron Nation. The fortress became the first European community in Ontario. The Jesuits later torched Sainte-Marie and moved on when turbulence with the Iroquois Indians made the area unsafe for them. Today, the original site has been recreated, and visitors can learn of the colourful past of the area. Address: Highway 12 East, Midland, ON Canada L4R 4K8
