Southern Georgian Bay at a Glance
Located just 90 minutes north of Toronto,
the Southern Georgian Bay region is well known for its inspirational scenery and
numerous outdoor activities. Consisting of thick woods, rolling hills, idyllic
beaches
and lively communities, the area stretches from Nottawasaga Bay, a thumbnail in
the Georgian Bay, southeast to Lake Simcoe. The region's clear waters provide
excellent freshwater fishing and boating experiences, while popular Wasaga
Beach's sands are well worth a visit. On land, play the area's golf
courses or explore a number of scenic nature walks. A year-round destination,
Southern Georgian Bay offers downhill skiing at Ontario's biggest slope, Blue
Mountain, located near Collingwood.
A diverse heritage means culture lovers and history buffs have much to enjoy at
the many aboriginal museums,
martyr shrines, missions and reconstructed settlements
and forts populating the area. More recent culture can also be found at South
Georgian Bay's theatres,
art
galleries and seasonal
festivals, especially in the large cities of Barrie
and Orillia.
